Ford's Biggest Quality Improvement in Years Is Good News for New Car Buyers

There is a lot that goes into deciding which new vehicle belongs in your driveway.

For some shoppers, it starts with price. Others begin with fuel economy, technology, towing capability or interior space.

For many of our customers here at the Ford dealership, however, the conversation eventually comes back to one thing: quality.

Nobody wants to spend their hard-earned money on a new vehicle and then spend their time worrying about whether everything is going to work properly.

That is what makes Ford's latest performance in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study particularly interesting.

Ford has earned the number one ranking among mainstream automotive brands in the 2026 J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study.

This is Ford's first time reaching the top of the mainstream brand rankings since 2010.

As someone who works with Ford customers every day, I see this recognition as more than a headline. It reflects a larger story about where Ford is heading and what today's Ford buyer can expect from the brand.

Ford's Progress Is Easy to See

The most impressive part of the latest results may be how dramatically Ford has changed its position.

Just three years ago, Ford ranked number 15 among mainstream brands in the study.

Now it sits at number one.

Ford also recorded the largest year over year improvement among mainstream brands, with 41 fewer problems reported per 100 vehicles compared with the previous year.

That kind of movement does not happen by accident.

It reflects a sustained effort to improve the products customers are actually driving.

The Results Go Beyond One Popular Model

One thing that stood out to me about the results is the number of Ford vehicles that performed well.

The F 150 , Mustang and Super Duty were each ranked highest in their respective segments.

The Escape , Explorer, Expedition and Maverick also finished within the top three of their categories.

In total, seven of Ford's 10 models included in the study ranked among the top three in their segments.

That matters because Ford customers are not all looking for the same thing.

The needs of a pickup truck owner can be completely different from those of a parent shopping for an SUV.

A customer looking for a Mustang has a completely different set of priorities.

Having strong results across multiple vehicle categories shows that Ford's progress is not limited to one corner of the lineup.

A New Vehicle Has Become a Technology Product Too

Something else has changed dramatically in the automotive industry.

Buying a new vehicle today is partly like buying a piece of technology.

Your vehicle may have multiple screens, sophisticated infotainment, connected services, smartphone integration and software that controls many of the systems you interact with every day.

That creates an entirely new definition of quality.

It is no longer just about the mechanical components.

The software needs to work.

The screens need to respond.

Connectivity needs to be reliable.

The features customers use every day need to function as expected.

Ford has made software quality a significant part of its improvement efforts.

The latest J.D. Power results show a notable improvement in infotainment performance, which Ford says is now 11 points better than the industry average.

That is important because infotainment has become one of the most frequently used parts of a modern vehicle.

Over the Air Updates Are Changing Ownership

Another interesting development is how manufacturers can improve vehicles after they have already been sold.

Ford now uses over the air software updates across its current vehicle lineup.

Instead of requiring every software improvement to happen during a service appointment, compatible systems can receive updates remotely.

That can mean software fixes, improvements and new features can reach customers without the traditional process of bringing the vehicle in for every change.

From a marketing standpoint, I think this is one of the more interesting developments in the automotive business because it changes the idea that a vehicle is completely finished the day you purchase it.

Modern vehicles can continue to evolve.

Ford Has Been Looking at Quality From a Different Angle

The J.D. Power recognition is the result of more than simply changing a few components or adjusting a manufacturing process.

Ford has been changing the way different teams work together.

Engineering, manufacturing, supply chain and quality teams have been brought closer together so they can address potential problems earlier.

Ford has also added experienced engineering talent and introduced additional design reviews to identify potential failure points before vehicles enter production.

That kind of work is not necessarily something customers will notice when they walk around a vehicle on a showroom floor.

But it is important.

The goal is to catch problems when they are still design decisions rather than customer complaints.

Supplier Relationships Have Become Part of the Quality Conversation

A vehicle is made up of thousands of individual parts.

That means the quality of a finished Ford depends on a much larger network than the people assembling vehicles at Ford facilities.

Ford has increased its focus on supplier involvement earlier in the development process.

The company says this effort has contributed to a 30 percent reduction in launch issues year over year.

From a customer's point of view, this is a good reminder that vehicle quality is a massive undertaking.

There are engineers, designers, manufacturing employees and suppliers all contributing to the vehicle that eventually arrives at our dealership.

When those groups work together effectively, the customer benefits.

What I Tell Customers About Quality

When someone asks me whether a particular vehicle is reliable or well built, I try not to reduce the answer to a single award.

  • There is no perfect vehicle.

  • Every customer has different expectations, and every vehicle has different strengths.

  • I encourage people to look at the complete picture.

  • Research the vehicle.

  • Look at professional evaluations.

  • Consider your budget.

  • Think about how you actually drive.

  • Then come to the dealership and spend some time with the vehicle.

  • Sit in the driver's seat.

  • Try the controls.

  • Explore the infotainment system.

  • Check the cargo area.

  • Bring the family if the vehicle will be a family vehicle.

  • If you are buying a truck, think about what you realistically need it to do.

  • A vehicle can look great online, but you learn much more when you actually spend time behind the wheel.

Why This Ford Recognition Matters

The 2026 J.D. Power results give Ford customers something substantial to point to when considering a new vehicle.

Ford is now the highest ranked mainstream brand in initial quality.

The brand made the largest year over year improvement among mainstream brands.

Several individual Ford vehicles earned top three segment finishes.

And Ford has continued investing in the engineering, manufacturing and software systems behind its vehicles.

For shoppers, that is a pretty compelling combination.

It does not eliminate the need to do your homework.

It does give you another reason to put Ford on your list.
