2022 Ford F-150 Lightning in Mt Orab, OH - Mt Orab Ford

If you’ve been waiting for Ford to release information about the 2022 F-150 Lightning electric pickup, your wait is over. In late May 2021, Ford finally introduced the world to the F-150 Lightning. This truck is more futuristic and impressive than we ever thought it would be. Here are some highlights of what Ford has told us about the electric Lightning so far.

Electric Strength

The 2022 F-150 Lightning has a target power output of 563 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of instant torque. Putting that into perspective may be difficult, as it’s the most power any factory-made F-150 has ever offered. This electric workhorse is slated to hit the 0-60 mph mark in the mid-4-second range.

For those who need their F-150 to work, the Lightning has a target of 10,000 pounds in maximum towing capacity and 2,000 pounds of maximum payload. The strongest of the gasoline-powered 2021 F-150 models can tow up to 14,000 pounds and handle up to a 3,325-pound payload. The weakest of the 2021 F-150 models can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The Lightning will be equipped with two electric motors that give it standard four-wheel-drive performance. The truck also features metal skid plates to protect its undercarriage while you’re exploring the off-roads.

Charging Your Batteries

The F-150 Lightning will be equipped with a standard battery that offers a 230-mile range, but you can upgrade to an extended-range battery to get a 300-mile range. When you need to charge your truck, you can do so at home or one of the public charging stations in the largest charging station network in North America. With these options, you will likely not have to worry about finding a place to fuel your truck up.

The Ford Intelligent Backup Power system can act as a mobile generator that can power a home for up to three days on a full charge, or 10 days if you ration your power. The Pro Power Onboard puts 11 outlets in your truck’s cabin and bed to allow you to plug in power tools, camping equipment, and whatever else you need when you’re on the go.

What is a Frunk?

Another interesting aspect of the F-150 Lightning is what Ford did with the engine’s former space. That space is now empty and called a “Mega Power Frunk.” It’s a trunk in the front, or “frunk” — get it? This space offers 14.1 cubic feet of cargo space and can hold up to 400 pounds.

Customizability

Though you can’t design your own 2022 F-150 Lightning just yet, you have a lot to think about until then. Like its gasoline-powered predecessor, the Lightning will be offered in trim levels. As of the time of this writing, Ford has announced an XLT, Lariat, and Platinum trim level. The higher you move through these, the more luxurious your all-electric truck grows.
